I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's fantastically written and runs at a great pace throughout-enough to challenge and engage me from start to finish. The characters are fleshed out and interesting and I'd like to read more. It's atmospheric as well and creates vivid imagery of the city-it's a like a character in itself. You normally get that with novels set in London but it's done with Liverpool here really well-it's subtle but really effective. Great characters, great story-highly recommend, good read all round.

"A very well thought out and atmospheric story, evoking the colour and menace of Liverpool in the 1930s. Characters (including the lead, Detective Sergeant Bridle) are well depicted and highly believable. Superb scenes of pubs in the Lime Street and City Road areas of the city, with a good description of the docks. My grandfather was a Liverpool docker in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, so this has quite an appeal for me. Excellent police thriller.  I really enjoyed the book - as a fan of Scandinavian crime novels I can see this running to two or three more novels, or even a more sustained run of novels featuring the excellent Mr Bridle."

I really enjoyed reading 'Dark Side of the River;' I felt it was engaging and the story was entertaining and challenging. The main character is well thought out and develops within the story and the pace is good-keeps you on your toes but doesn't confuse. The author shows excellent knowledge of the city as well which gives a deeply atmospheric novel that I would read again and enjoy. Highly recommend!

"My wife bought me this book to take on our recent holiday in Rhodes as it was recomended to her by a friend. I wasn't sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised. Set in Liverpool in the 1930's with a realistic atmospheric feel. It has a good story line with plenty of twists. My wife read it after me and could hardly put it down. A really enjoyable read for anyone who likes a period crime drama with a touch of social history thrown in."
